Introduction To The Site

Purpose of the API

Business Link has created a service which allows web-site and application developers to select and collect content from the all the Business Link web sites in the UK. You can get access to over 15,000 articles, guides and videos; in fact most content that is currently live, right up to content published overnight. Business Link's tagging information architecture can be searched, as can the actual content of web pages.

Who can access this Content

Initially the content can be accessed by approved partner organisations. We will offer 2 tiers of service to support a range of working relationships:

  • Initially: full access to an API; and
  • in the future: code that allows RSS widgets to be included in your site

The API can be used to provide content in your site.

Site layout

This site is divided into public pages:

  • An RSS fed widget for Partners and Anonymous users
  • Request page to join the Partner Scheme
  • API Guides
  • Sample API Code
  • An API Explorer

and Partner Pages:

  • API usage information
  • Commenting and Improvement requests

Benefits of the API

This Business Link service aligns with the Data.gov initiative to open up access to public data and allows partners to easily incorporate content into their own web pages. For example, an organisation supporting the manufacturing sector in the North East of England can quickly define a search which will populate their web site with relevant content from Business Link to suit their local audience. This can include local events, awards and support, industry news, related tax matters, guides and videos.

The open information architecture allows data and content to be combined with information from other data sources, e.g. Data.gov or Directgov | innovate and other sources.

Another feature allows you to create apps based on the information obtained through the API. For example some of the sample code provided is for a demonstration iPad and Android app.

To get started quickly without registering, you can use the RSS widgets provided through the Business Link Improvement Portal
